Matthew
August Ferrell was recently appointed Interim Associate Conductor
to the Master Chorale of South Florida. In this position, he
has assisted in the preparation of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony
with the Cleveland Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Welser-Möst
and Brahms’s German Requiem conducted by Jo-Michael Scheibe.
Mr. Ferrell
has conducted volunteer choirs as well as fully professional
ensembles. He is an active member in the American Choral Directors’
Association and Chorus America and a D.M.A. Candidate in Choral
Conducting at the University of Miami, where he conducts the
Ocean Reef Chapel Choir, University Chamber Singers, and co-conducts
the Men’s Chorale. In addition, his responsibilities as
Choral Teaching Assistant include organizing the annual Holiday
Dinner performances and teaching undergraduate classes in conducting.
Mr. Ferrell
graduated from the Hartt School – University of Hartford
in 2000 with a degree in Music Education. In July 2003, Mr.
Ferrell concluded his 3-year tenure as Director of Choral Activities
at New Lebanon High School in New York State. Subsequently,
he took a position as Teaching Assistant at Temple University
where he completed his Masters of Music in Choral Conducting.
Mr. Ferrell has since been awarded two Conducting Fellows at
prominent summer institutions: the Chorus American Choral/Orchestral
Conducting Workshop and the Conductors Institute of South Carolina.
Through these programs he has conducted the symphonies of Beethoven,
Tchaikovsky, Brahms, and Mendelssohn and studied under Dale
Warland, Robert Porco, Duain Wolfe, John Alexander, Philip Greenburg,
Jorge Mester, and Marin Alsop.
